Long ago, during the 17th century, the O’Neills and O’Reillys were two revolutionary Irish families. They formed a rowing competition to reserve rights to some highly regarded land. The two rowing teams agreed that the first to touch the land, after rowing across the lake, would become ruler of the land. O’Neill’s boat was falling behind so a member of the crew grabbed his own sword, cut off his hand and threw it ashore, winning the title to rule the land. This land still remains in the family. This generous fusion in the Owen Roe Sinister Hand 2015 of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault is easily approachable while displaying undeniable complexity. The Grenache portion of the blend contributes cranberry and raspberry candied fruit notes, while the Syrah delivers darker fruits and savoury characteristics. Mourvedre enhances the structure and richness of the body and provides delicate aromas of violets. The partially carbonic macerated Cinsault brings liveliness and tropical fruit flavors to the blend. Try pairing with a smoked salmon dish with cranberry sauce and grilled portabello.

Peachy Canyon Incredible Red 2015 is a marvelous blend of 97% Zinfandel, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Alicante Bouschet – perfect for those fall diinners like stew or chili or roast pork! A rich and fruity nose opens with black cherry, blackberry, nutmeg, and vanilla, leading into toffee, cigar, and cherrywood. On the palate the wine is round and sumptuous, with notes of cherry, clove, and orange oil. This Incredible Red meets and exceeds the promise in its name.

When the Petersons replanted the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard in 2007, they were inspired to try different grape varieties. After multiple trips to the Rhone Valley of Southern France, the inspiration to plant Grenache was solidified. Without experience growing the varietal in our mountain vineyard, or making much in the winery, we weren’t sure what expression the resulting wines would put forward. Now they know. The Grenache from the mountain produces a high quality wine with all the classic characteristics of great spice, and some of the garriguey flavors, with the essence of minerality from the site coming through. Building on this base, they strove to create a blend with depth and complexity, while not overwhelming the nuances of the core. They build from the core of plush, forward fruit Grenache (54%), added spice and depth with Carignane (26%), compexity and tannin from Mourvedre (13%) and for rich, layered structure, Petite Sirah (7%).
This delicious Rhône-varietal blend invites you in with the first whiff. Intriguing aromatics of red fruit are laced with notes of earth, spices and a rich mineral essence. The luscious core of ripe summer berries offers round corners and spicy edges. As the wine opens, the tone darkens a shade as flavors of dried strawberry, black cherry, plum, coffee and a touch of rhubarb appear. Balanced acidity bathes the plush palate and embraces the flavors as they linger.

The 2016 Napa Valley growing season began with a mild winter resulting in early bud break for some blocks at the beginning of March. A normal period of bloom and veraison took place in early May and mid-July, respectively. The 2016 growing season was cooler compared to the previous three vintages, allowing for aromas and flavors to develop slowly in the red varieties yielding classic Cabernet Sauvignon from each of their vineyards.
The 2016 Phelps Insignia is fresh and focused on entry with expressive cocoa powder, graphite and earthy spices. Elegant and complex with a supple, creamy texture and bold tannins, this latest vintage offers luscious ripe plum and blackberry character with hints of roasted coffee and dark cherry throughout the palate to a long, velvety finish.

The Rabble Red Blend 2018 comes from the Mossfire Ranch Vineyard in Paso Robles. Aged in French oak, it is made up of 90% Merlot and 10% Syrah. Brooding purple with dark rimmed color. The nose blooms first with red cherry, ripe plum to dark raspberry with hints of anise seed and ending dusty suede. The palate is explosive, lush ripe fruits give way to supple tannin, layers of dark and bright berries with balanced acidity and firm yet restrained structure. The strong finish lingers of black tea and plum. The Rabble labels are renditions of historical wood block prints from the Nuremberg Chronicle (late 1400’s), textured and tactile, depicting nature’s wrath. Nature is ruthless when it goes ignored. This label illustrates the Apocalyptic Comet falling upon Florence with the Unicorn and Phoenix.

From the Rioja clone and aged 12 months in French oak, the Rabble Tempranillo 2016, Mossfire Ranch Vineyard. Made up of 100% Tempranillo, it is opaque purple-colored, offering up a super-expressive bouquet of bacon, tar, mineral, pencil lead, blueberry, black raspberry, and licorice. Smooth-textured, layered, ripe, and sweetly-fruited, this forward pleasurable, lengthy effort has 2-3 years of aging potential but can be enjoyed now and over the next 10 years.

As you can see from the picture – the front label is a handwritten tome by winemaker, Brandon Allen. Here is what it says, “This bottle originated from a bootlegging operation my Buddies and I had in college. We started making wine knowing it would be used for late night drinking, and that the French are annoying. It took some time, but we finally perfected our Blend, and came up with this full bodied red that pairs well with Wednesday nights and pizza. We use grapes from all over California so we recomend [sic] this be drank [sic] immediately, and shared with girls.”
It’s not getting routine; it just keeps getting better. The 2017 Sexual Chocolate is pure hedonism in a bottle, but crafted with great care and consideration toward quality. Having made the blend for nearly ten years, winemaker Brandon Allen has developed just the right formula for a wine that delivers loads of flavor for a value. The 2017 vintage is mostly a Syrah blend that delivers an intense combo of ripe, dark fruit with a long, smooth finish. This is a wine that can hold its own but is also a most welcome addition to a variety of foods.

In 2001, Tom Stolpman asked his winemaker to blend the few best barrels and create a wine in honor of his wife, Marilyn, and her Italian heritage. Through this wine, the Angeli family of Lucca would live on. By 2002 he identified the very top part of the Block 5 ridgeline as the vineyard’s standout micro section. Ever since, he has selected the best barrels of this block for Angeli. Not only will the 2016 blossom in the cellar, it blows us away today, right out of the gate. Our favorite type of wine, Angeli combines intense, bright perfume with ripe, rich, and mouth-filling robustness. It’s delicate and pretty while powerful and lasting. 2016 Angeli might be the most hedonistic of the altogether pleasurable, yummy 2016 vintage. Richer and deeper than the higher toned Angeli of the past few years, the 2016 offers immediate gratification. “In every wine we make, our goal is to combine ripe richness with savory liveliness – interesting wines that coat the palate and leave one yearning for more. Stolpman La Cuadrilla 2018$25.00
When Tom Stolpman purchased the land that is now Stolpman Vineyards, he declared that if his dream of owning a vineyard was to come true, it would not be on the backs of people being taken advantage of. He asked vineyard manager Ruben Solorzano to employ our vineyard workers year-round, so the team members could have a steady job, a career, and raise their families with security. A man of action, Ruben started a training program in which he gave one Cuadra – a small vineyard block – to his team so they would take responsibility for their land. Each crew member became the farmer rather than just the worker. The profits are returned to the crew members in the form of a year-end bonus. The 2017 label honors the founder of Cuadrilla, Ruben Solorzano. Ruben is envisioned as one of the Red Tailed Hawks that glide in the wind above the vineyard every afternoon. He oversees the crew and the vines with an all-knowing presence. The Hawk is emblazoned with picking sheers, a symbol for only touching the vines by hand rather than by machine – as well as moons in different phases, as they work the ground and the vines based on variances in lunar gravity. Stolpman 2018 La Cuadrilla pops with a blast of fresh red plum, boysenberry, and blueberry fruit. Enjoyable out of the gate, the full-bodied wine’s power is totally in check – with tannin and acidity already integrated into the pure juiciness that lasts way through the finish. Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Rouge 2017$34.00
Patelin is French for village or community and the Patelin wines from Tablas Creek use fruit from neighboring vineyards as well as their own. The Tablas Creek Vineyard Patelin de Tablas is a blend of four red Rhône varietals: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Counoise. The wine incorporates fruit from several of the top Rhône vineyards in Paso Robles, each vineyard selected for its quality. Like many red wines from the Rhône Valley, it is based on the dark fruit, mineral and spice of Syrah, with the brightness and fresh acidity of Grenache, the structure and meatiness of Mourvèdre and a small addition of Counoise for complexity. The 2017 Patelin de Tablas has a dark, Syrah-driven nose that is creamy, meaty, minerally, and a little bit wild. A little blue fruit lurks underneath and comes out with air. The mouth shows both Grenache and Syrah's influence, with black plum, boysenberry, chalky minerality and nice powdered sugar tannins that come out on the finish. Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is a blend of the finest grapes from the Manachiara and Casale del Bosco estates. Silvio Nardi follows the strict DOCG laws required of a classified Brunello di Montalcino. Yield is limited; only the top 70% of the grapes is used to make the wine. Bottle aged at least 12 months before release. This deep, ruby-red wine has intense, complex aromas of red fruits and spices, with toasty oak notes. The wine shows a silky texture, great finesse and profound flavors, framed by noble, velvety tannins. Though impressive now, this wine will benefit from aging. If the perfect dinner for you is a big juicy steak, then this is the wine for you.
