Columbia Valley Duo$58
In Latin, the name for the Ex Umbris Syrah is a reference of truth emerging “from the shade” or “from the dark,” and it was first released from a vintage influenced by hillside fires near Owen Roe’s vineyard sources in Washington. The residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine. Year after year, they are asked to develop a Syrah to keep the story of this wine alive! Long ago, during the 17th century, the O’Neills and O’Reillys were two revolutionary Irish families. They formed a rowing competition to reserve rights to some highly regarded land. The two rowing teams agreed that the first to touch the land, after rowing across the lake, would become ruler of the land. O’Neill’s boat was falling behind so a member of the crew grabbed his own sword, cut off his hand and threw it ashore, winning the title to rule the land. This land still remains in the family. This generous fusion in the Owen Roe Sinister Hand 2015 of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault is easily approachable while displaying undeniable complexity. The Grenache portion of the blend contributes cranberry and raspberry candied fruit notes, while the Syrah delivers darker fruits and savoury characteristics. Mourvedre enhances the structure and richness of the body and provides delicate aromas of violets. The partially carbonic macerated Cinsault brings liveliness and tropical fruit flavors to the blend.

Chalk Hill is an appellation with, generally, warmer days than in the rest of the Russian River Valley, with a variety of volcanic and alluvial soils across the western foothills of the Mayacamas range. In fire-fighting parlance, a “tillerman” steers the back of a hook & ladder truck. Founder Cecil De Loach held this position in the San Francisco Fire Department. The Hook & Ladder Tillerman 2014 red blend exhibits a deep purple and beet red hue, and notes of ripe berries, black cherry, and baking spices on the nose. Layered flavors of black currant and raspberry lead to a long finish of spice and dusty cocoa. 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 24% Sangiovese.
Station Ten is the fire house in San Francisco from which Cecil De Loach retired. The dark brick-red colored Hook & Ladder Station Ten Zinfandel 2013 blend displays spicy aromas of dried raspberries, currants, strawberries and cinnamon with hints of cloves and nutmeg. Flavors of blackberry, cherry and powdered cocoa complement the long cinnamon finish, framed with light pepper notes. Try this versatile Zinfandel blend with any red meat from the grill or dishes featuring tomato-based sauces. Think pizza! 59% Zinfandel.18% Petite Sirah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Carignane,1% Alicante Bouschet.
A portion of all sales goes to victims of California wildfires.

They thought if he couldn’t see the world, then he wouldn’t make his mark. But a Blindfold won’t hold him back. It just heightens his other senses. And whether they like it or not, his resilience will leave a lasting impression. Blindfold 2015 is made from Chardonnay blended with white Rhône and aromatic varieties, equally bold and intriguing—a luscious entry of toasted hazelnut and mandarin is balanced by bright acidity and minerality. The finish is rich and creamy with flavors of lemon zest and caramelized sugar.
