Saucelito Canyon Vineyard Estate Zinfandel 2014, Arroyo Grande Valley San Luis Obispo California USA
The Saucelito Canyon story begins in 1880, when three acres of Zinfandel vines were planted in the rugged terrain of the upper Arroyo Grande Valley on California’s Central Coast. A new chapter was written a century later, when Bill Greenough painstakingly restored the abandoned old vineyard and began making what has become one of California’s most distinguished Zinfandels. The story continues today as Bill merges new methods in sustainable winegrowing with family traditions and winemaking style, which he collectively calls the “Saucelito Way.” Saucelito Canyon uses many sustainable farming practices and is dedicated to researching and promoting sustainability. A flock of sheep is introduced each spring as a natural means for weed control, in contrast to tilling and herbicide application. Other sustainable practices include composting and cover cropping, as well as reliance on the natural rainfall cycle via dry farming. Alternative energy, including solar, is also being integrated into the operation.
