Bordered by the Estrella river in Paso Robles, Tolliver Ranch features well-drained, sandy-gravely soils that are acidic due to the presence of decomposed granite , unlike most soil profiles in the Paso Robles region. Conditions at the site are ideal for big red varietals such as Petite Sirah, Syrah and Cabernet which thrive in the vineyard’s soils, and utilize the long growing season. A beautiful full-bodied Cabernet Blend! Red currants, cassis and red fruit dominate the nose while nuances of Christmas spice, pine and dried fall leaves add to the intriguing aromatics. The layered palate offers great weight and density with ripe flavors of black berries and plums. The surprisingly bright acidity and mouthwatering texture weaves into a firm finish with lingering tannins. Piocho Ranch was acquired by Thomas J. Barrack Jr. in 1992. Out of a love for the countryside and a ranchers life, the Barrack family developed rolling acres of vineyards. The peaceful and beautiful property sits nestled in the Happy Canyon Valley, a perfect location for growing grapes and riding horses. Two regulation sized Polo fields are groomed with the same care as the finest golf courses in the world. Piocho means “Where the two rivers meet and go to heaven.” The Happy Canyon Piocho 2017, a Bordeaux blend, has an inviting deep ruby color. Ripe black currant, cherry, espresso and smoky oak show on the nose. This wine is lush, sweet and open-knit, with a pliancy to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and chewing tobacco. The Happy Canyon Bordeaux Red Blend 2017 exhibits deep aromas of spice, dark bing cherries, wood, burnt blackberries and jam. On the palate there are slight herbal/floral flavors with minerality, dried violets and tobacco all surrounded by dense fruit. This a truly lovely wine that is wonderful to drink today when paired with big rich cuisine such as Santa Maria Tri-Tip. The wines structure will allow it to mature and age nicely for at least another decade! Dusty, slow-building tannins give grip to the finish, which repeats the cherry and licorice notes.

This year marks the fourteenth anniversary of J. Lohr’s heartfelt partnership with National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. The Touching Lives initiative began when the Lohr family designated the J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon a commemorative release in honor of founder Jerry Lohr’s late wife. Carol Lohr passed away in 2008 due to complications from breast cancer.
Today, $3 from every purchase of J Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, whether at your local restaurant, wine shop, or online is donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since the program’s inception, sales from J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard releases have supported early breast cancer detection, access to mammograms, patient navigation systems, and the delivery of HOPE Kits (a gift box of comforting items) to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. These programs continue to build on a partnership that has funded over 6,500 mammograms for women who otherwise would not be able to afford them.
