BARRA Chardonnay 2020, Mendocino County

Home > Region > Region - California > BARRA Chardonnay 2020, Mendocino County

All of the grapes for this Barra Chardonnay 2020 are from the estate. The fruit for this barrel fermented wine were hand picked from the organically farmed home ranch located on the bench lands at the headwaters of the Russian River in Redwood Valley, CA. This Chardonnay was barrel fermented in 25% new French oak with the remainder fermenting in more neutral barrels. After primary fermentation, the wine was left on the lees and stirred weekly using the bâttonage method. The malolactic fermentation took place over 25 days.

White peach,  honeysuckle, and a kiss of tropical guava mingle effortlessly with oak elements of subtle vanilla, caramel and fresh toasted bread. On the palate, a firm acid structure and distinct minerality is  followed by a  balanced,  silky roundness. The finish is powerful yet elegant, and delivers a quenching, satisfying experience.

This label illustrates the Kraken attacking Dubrovnik. Aromatically the 2019 Rabble is driven with crushed pineapple, white peach, pear, and hazelnut notes. The 2019 vintage is characterized by being a drought year, which highlights the minerality in this wine. Wines from these years typically exhibit an interesting saline component “underneath” the fruit. On the palate the 2018 Rabble Chardonnay has luscious mouthfeel with bright acidity. The flavor profile begins with citrus, pear and transitions to a tropical laden finish driven with pineapple and guava.

Ample rainfall in the spring recharged the soil profile and provided a strong start to the growing season. The weather during the summer featured consistent warmth and sunshine without any major heat spells. Cooler than average temperatures in August and September slowed the ripening process for the Trefethen Chardonnay 2020, providing long hang time and leading to complex flavor development.

The growing season began early after a very dry winter that included only half of our typical rainfall. The summer was sunny and pleasant, our warmest since 2003, and the harvest began a few weeks earlier than usual. The white wines from this vintage feature concentrated flavors and our signature brightness on the palate.

This wine has fresh and vibrant aromas of sliced green apple, white peach, and honeysuckle with integrated notes of baked apple and puff pastry on the palate. It is round, layered, and complex with a refreshing acidity that leads to a full and lengthy finish.

The Trefethen Chardonnay pairs exceptionally well with Cioppino. The acidity cuts through the richness of the tomatoes, while the wine’s complexity complements the other ingredients, and its structure keeps the flavors balanced.

Shafer’s single-vineyard Carneros-grown Chardonnay is produced from small-clustered clones of
grapes selected for their low yields and distinctive flavors. Fermentation takes place within individual oak and stainless steel barrels using native yeasts. The wine matures on the lees for 14 months
and since it undergoes no malolactic fermentation this Chardonnay retains a lively natural acidity.
The vineyard is named for its Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey, who play an
important role in Shafer’s sustainable farming practices.
This 25th vintage of Shafer Red Should Ranch Chardonnay 2018 offers abundant, exotic aromas and flavors of citrus
blossom, apricot, pineapple, grapefruit zest, and honeydew melon all held together with seamless
structure, elegant balance, and energy that comes from pure, clean acidity.
