Banshee “Mordecai” Red Blend 2018$32.00
All of the elements of this wine are made with the house philosophy (think: bright flavors, focus, energy, good with food), with the overreaching mandate that it is absolutely delicious. The very rough and unscientific formula is this: about a third Bordeaux varieties, about a third Rhone varieties, and about a third other varieties dominated by Zinfandel with a bit of of this or that peppered in to add interesting accent notes. Carignan sourced from a 45-year-old, organically farmed vineyard in Redwood Valley continues to expand its influence in Mordecai, acting as a bridge between the Rhone and Bordeaux lots. The 2018 Mordecai has an enticing nose of pepper, violets, cigar and cassis. On the palate it is a mouthwatering mélange of red berry and plum flavors backed by earthy tones of herb roasted meat and fresh black trumpet giving way to a spice-laden finish.
Owen Roe Sinister Hand 2019$29.00
Long ago, during the 17th century, the O’Neills and O’Reillys were two revolutionary Irish families. They formed a rowing competition to reserve rights to some highly regarded land. The two rowing teams agreed that the first to touch the land, after rowing across the lake, would become ruler of the land. O’Neill’s boat was falling behind so a member of the crew grabbed his own sword, cut off his hand and threw it ashore, winning the title to rule the land. This land still remains in the family. This generous fusion in the Owen Roe Sinister Hand 2019 of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault is easily approachable while displaying undeniable complexity. The Grenache portion of the blend contributes cranberry and raspberry candied fruit notes, while the Syrah delivers darker fruits and savoury characteristics. Mourvedre enhances the structure and richness of the body and provides delicate aromas of violets. The partially carbonic macerated Cinsault brings liveliness and tropical fruit flavors to the blend. Try pairing with a smoked salmon dish with cranberry sauce and grilled portabello.
Mutt Lynch 2018 HellHound$30.00
Hellhound…a supernatural dog, mythical in nature, jet black and red with piercing yellow eyes, the guardian of the gates of hell. Legend has it that seeing a hellhound or hearing its howl is ominous. Stare into its eyes three times and death awaits. Just think of what will happen when you drink a glass of Mutt Lynch HellHound. Dark and violent, it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Bourbon barrels. Certainly not for the faint of heart. This noble beast opens to aromas of toasty oak and blackberries. On the palate you’ll find notes of blackberries, cherries, tobacco and leather. The 2018 HellHound is full-bodied, with silky tannins and a nice finish. Available now for a great taste but will also age well. We’re at the mercy of this beauty of a beast. It’s big, bold and very tempting. Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? The obvious pairing is something from the grill–steak or even a great burger. But…a great pasta with sausage also comes to mind.
