The Carol Shelton Old Vine Mendocino Zinfandel 2015 is a treasure. Grown on the benchlands and slopes of mountainsides — this 60 plus year old vine Zinfandel was named for these wild- looking vines and also for the uninoculated, or “wild,” yeast ferment that was used to create it. Aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and raspberry fruit combine with a hint of graphite, cigar box, and vanilla-oak baking spice loveliness. Smoothly textured in mouth, and the palate is very creamy and round, with a finish that is long with lush jammy fruit. 80% Zinfandel, 10% Carignane, 9% Petite Sirah, 1% Alicante Bouschet.

In 1995, they started their own label with consulting winemaker, Duane Dappen (D-Cubed) getting them going. That was a great day for the wine world! The flagship Napa Valley Zinfandel historically has borne the responsibility of being the ultimate representative of what the Brown property and its unique microclimate have to offer—the cream of the Brown Estate zinfandel crop blended into one stellar wine. As such, it is the most challenging zin they produce because it requires commingling of several distinct personalities into a singular well-adjusted protagonist. The fact that each vineyard’s qualities complement and enhance the others’ virtues is a testament to the integration, fluidity, and perpetual motion—the balancing act!—that is Brown Estate itself. Stunning gemstone magenta core and ruby rim. True on the nose to the hallmark Brown Estate bouquet of rose petals, lily of the valley, hibiscus flowers, Asian apple, and effervescent citrus followed by dried apricot and peach. Medium body with silky mouthfeel, the palate at first delivers a burst of ripe red fruits, heavy cream, and loads of cascading exotic spice, finishing with a surprise of subtle crushed black pepper. Brilliant dark magenta core with ruby rim. Lively nose of ripe Rainier cherries, blackberry compote, winter spice, and heavy cream leads to Asian apple and Meyer lemon followed by dark chocolate, tiramisu, and fresh baked croissants/brioche. Time in the glass brings forth rose petal potpourri, tea rose perfume, brandied cherries, and heavy whipping cream. Silky mouthfeel, medium-bodied yet markedly vibrant. The winemaking at Woodenhead is pure and simple. Their wine is handcrafted from a hard labor of love in tune to the natural rhythm of the land, the water, the air, and the seasons. No mechanical pumping is employed. Inoculated yeast and malolactic cultures, hand punching, basket pressing, French oak, and California fruit is what you get. Small and unique lots are their goal, ultra premium wine is the result. The award winning Woodenhead Zinfandel 2014, Guido Venturi is a very dark ruby red, with tight aromas, but essences of sage, plum, and briar. What it withholds in aromatics right now, it more than makes up for on the palate. A big wine, viscous with plenty of legs, big, bright and juicy, berries, plums, rose, cedar cigar box. Full bodied for sure, jammy, spicy with some pepper. Moderate tannins. Medium long finish and complexity. A bomb! Pair it with BBQ, smoked meats, garlic bread. You get the picture!
