Champ de Reves Pinot Noir 2014, Anderson Valley

Home > Region > Region - California > Champ de Reves Pinot Noir 2014, Anderson Valley

As a winegrowing region, there is no other Pinot Noir AVA in America that has more potential than Anderson Valley in Mendocino. The features of the valley are a Mecca for the cultivation of Pinot: here one finds daily, cooling maritime influence, dramatic geological contours with high mountains on either side of the valley, rocky soils and a mix of classic California flora and trees. The Champ de Reves spectacular vineyard is perched high above Boonville in the hills of Anderson Valley, just 18 miles from the Pacific coastline. Boone Ridge is a veritable aerie, with sweeping views of the valley below. A wide array of aspects in the vineyard creates multiple mesoclimates, each displaying unique characteristics as these relatively young vines continue to age.
The Champ de Reves 2014 Pinot Noir shows vibrant blueberry-strawberry fruit intertwined with aromas of dark-red rose, maple, licorice, and toasted hazelnut. On the palate, juicy raspberry, dark cocoa, and pennyroyal flavors emerge. Delicately-balanced acidity and crystalline minerality lead into a firmly structured finish.

This is the 24th release of the St. Gregory Mendocino Pinot Noir 2016, Mendocino County’s cool climate produces a very elegant and rich style of Pinot Noir with balanced acidity, dark color, full tannins and very fruity flavors. Their style is much more French Burgundy than California. The grapes for this wine come from three truly unique vineyards located within three distinct appellations within Mendocino County. 79% of the blend is from Lost Creek Vineyards owned by Steve Petrucci and is located at the 1,200 foot elevation in the mountainous Yorkville Highlands appellation. 7% is from the Naughty Boy Vineyard located in the high elevation Potter Valley, which is grown next to the headwaters of the Russian River. 14% is Pinotage which is grown by the Gearhart Vineyard which is located in Knights Valley, just south of the Ukiah Valley in Mendocino County.

This wine is dark purple garnet in color and Burgundian in style; with rich, full and attractive aromas/flavors of ripe black cherries, plum, toasty oak and hints of earth. Soft tannins, balanced acidity and a rich, velvety mouth-feel produce a luscious wine that is enjoyable now and will develop more complexity with additional aging in the bottle.

Delicious companions with this wine are duck with dried cherries, sage-roasted double pork chops with stuffing, and roasted lamb with Mediterranean vegetables.

  • Steele Pinot Noir 2015 Sangiacomo Vineyard, Green Acres, Carneros

    $42.00

The Sangiacomo Vineyards are situated in many areas of southern Sonoma County in the area known as Carneros. For many years this was just grazing land, thought to be too cold for the production of fine quality wine grapes. To look at the land one would agree that grapes should not do well here: the heavy adobe clay soil and the lack of sun seemed to contradict the accepted viticultural wisdom. However, for varieties which do best in cooler conditions, especially Pinot Noir, this is the place. Since there are many different vineyard blocks,Steele Wines keeps each separate during the fermentation and aging of the Steele Pinot Noir Carneros 2015.

Steele has worked with Pinot Noir from Sangiacomo since their first vintage in 1991. Each year they choose the best lots and produce a single vineyard bottling in exceptional years. This blend is a beautiful and consistent expression of Pinot Noir: medium color and the pronounced aroma of Bing cherries and raspberries, combined with a silky, smooth structure, slight earthiness and mild tannin create perfect balance and a delicious, lingering finish. We recommend roast pheasant with a cherry and almond chutney, or with creamy polenta with mushrooms and eggplant.

Nori Nakamura first learned about fine wine at his uncle’s Italian restaurant in Tokyo. Fulfilling his dream  he enrolled in the viticulture program at UC Davis where he graduated in 2002. Subsequently, he has gone on to become assistant winemaker at Koves-Newlan, Pine Ridge Vineyards & Artesa and head winemaker at Jamison Ranch and currently at Larson Family Winery. The 2017 Noria Pinot Noir Russian River, Michael Valentine Vineyards features Intense aromas of raspberry, violet, a hint of dark cherry, rose-petal, and seductive bouquets of cedar, white pepper, and caramel. Fragrant entry. Stylish, refreshing red berry flavor quickly expands on the palate. Vibrant acidity and silky mouth feel melt into an elegant, long finish.
