Curatolo Arini Nero d’Avola DOC 2019

Home > Country > Country - Italy > Curatolo Arini Nero d’Avola DOC 2019

For nearly 150 years, Curatolo Arini has built a distinct reputation for the expression and purity of their wines. The winery is still family owned, with 140 hectares in western and central Sicily, under the leadership of Roberto and Sergio Curatolo. Winemaking is advised upon by oenologist Alberto Antonini, who has worked previously with such producers as Antinori. As the oldest, continuously family-owned winery producing Marsala, Curatolo Arini crafts both dry and sweet wines, largely from single vineyards in such regions as Salemi, Trapani and – of course – Marsala. Bright ruby red color, this 100% Nero d’Avola is produced in the appassimento style from dried Nero d’Avola grapes, adding rich plum notes, spice and ripe body to the wine. Notes of ripe cherries, plums, violets and a touch of white pepper. Juicy, with soft tannins with a fresh fruity finish. Excellent for barbeque, pasta putanessca, ripe cheeses and roasted vegetables.

Long ago, during the 17th century, the O’Neills and O’Reillys were two revolutionary Irish families. They formed a rowing competition to reserve rights to some highly regarded land. The two rowing teams agreed that the first to touch the land, after rowing across the lake, would become ruler of the land. O’Neill’s boat was falling behind so a member of the crew grabbed his own sword, cut off his hand and threw it ashore, winning the title to rule the land. This land still remains in the family. This generous fusion in the Owen Roe Sinister Hand 2019 of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault is easily approachable while displaying undeniable complexity. The Grenache portion of the blend contributes cranberry and raspberry candied fruit notes, while the Syrah delivers darker fruits and savoury characteristics. Mourvedre enhances the structure and richness of the body and provides delicate aromas of violets. The partially carbonic macerated Cinsault brings liveliness and tropical fruit flavors to the blend. Try pairing with a smoked salmon dish with cranberry sauce and grilled portabello.

    Stolpman La Cuadrilla 2020

    $25.00

When Tom Stolpman purchased the land that is now Stolpman Vineyards, he declared that if his dream of owning a vineyard was to come true, it would not be on the backs of people being taken advantage of.  He asked vineyard manager Ruben Solorzano to employ our vineyard workers year-round, so the team members could have a steady job, a career, and raise their families with security. A man of action, Ruben started a training program in which he gave one Cuadra – a small vineyard block – to his team so they would take responsibility for their land.  Each crew member became the farmer rather than just the worker. The profits are returned to the crew members in the form of a year-end bonus. The 2019 label honors the founder of Cuadrilla, Ruben Solorzano. Ruben is envisioned as one of the Red Tailed Hawks that glide in the wind above the vineyard every afternoon.  He oversees the crew and the vines with an all-knowing presence.  The Hawk is emblazoned with picking sheers, a symbol for only touching the vines by hand rather than by machine – as well as moons in different phases, as they work the ground and the vines based on variances in lunar gravity. 2020 Stolpman La Cuadrilla opens with a whole new world of red fruit from crunchy, tangy cranberry through to pure driving ripeness. A cut of lemon from the balancing acidity combines with mint leaves, chocolate, and peppercorns. Tannin lies just under the lingering red fruit finish, creating a tautness to the firm young wine. Already exceedingly pleasurable upon release, the wine evolves from a bright young profile to a richer, hedonistic full body with a few swirls in the glass.

In 1975, John Williams and Jim Holmes planted the first vineyard on Red Mountain, in Washington, an area now known for producing some of the world’s most powerful, opulent wines of distinction. For three generations they've worked side by side, hand in hand to craft exciting, vineyard-driven wines that capture the essence of Red Mountain and the Columbia Valley. Kiona Estates Cuvée 2016 is a blend from all of their estate vineyards. Each site contributes to the wine in a special way, resulting in an estate-grown wine that is uniquely representative of Washington state. The Columbia Valley components bring acid, fruit, and drinkability, while the Red Mountain additions contribute depth, structure, and color. This nuanced, multi-faceted, food-pairing superstar shows that Washington wines pack a serious punch at every price point. This classic blend showcases smooth, refined tannins and a long finish. Supple dark berry and earth on the palate round out the experience. Selective blending from some of Washington’s finest vineyards along with careful oak aging yields a balanced, intricate wine. They are able to sell it inexpensively because they sell grapes to about 60 other wineries, and make their money there.
