Elizabeth Spencer Rose 2020, Mendocino

Home > Region > Region - California > Elizabeth Spencer Rose 2020, Mendocino

Owned by the same family for nearly 100 years, the vineyard for the Elizabeth Spencer Rosé of Grenache 2020 is located on the southwestern facing slope along the Talmage Bench east of Ukiah in Mendocino County. The Russian River flows the length of the Ukiah Valley, and the fertile flood plain of this famous waterway is flanked by miles of benchland. The rough, stony, well-drained soils here force the vines to struggle throughout the growing season, and as a result, the small berries develop concentrated aromatics and flavors.

Crafted with purpose from the outset, the Rosé of Grenache shows pale amber in the glass, with an abundance of lush tropical fruit like tart kiwi and pineapple on the nose. The palate offers fresh stone fruit notes of nectarine, mango with hints of crisp green apple. Delicate with bright acidity, this wine offers enough structure to enjoy year round.

The 2018 Trecini Merlot comes from the Dunn Vineyard, which sits in the low-lying eastern foothills of Sonoma County in a slightly warmer region of the Russian River Valley. The vines grow in well drained gravely soils on a westerly facing slope which allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and capture the last bit of the sun’s afternoon warmth, an essential factor in this much cooler vintage. Memorable, the Merlot brings a richer mouth-feel, with a rich velvet texture. The lower alcohol allows for these deeper complex textures and dimensions to come together and produce a distinctive classic Merlot more reminiscent of Europe than California. Trecini Merlot shows off delicious red fruit characters, with some whiffs of dried herbs and a touch of tobacco. Suitable for drinking now, we believe that this wine has enough natural acidity and structure to be consumed for several years to come.

    $21.00

Sean Minor was born in Kansas but he began his career in the wine industry after a formal education in finance from Arizona State University where he also met his wife, Nicole. They moved to California after graduation, where he began working for Napa Valley’s Beaulieu Vineyard. At the same time he took classes at U.C. Davis in Viticultural and Enology in hopes of developing a further understanding of grape growing and wine production. Then Sean moved to the Pacific Northwest after being recruited by King Estate Winery (widely renown for producing Oregon’s largest and most highly regarded Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris) to manage the Estate. He met Will Bucklin, King Estate’s then winemaker, and developed an even stronger knowledge of winemaking and gained a lifelong friend. Sean learned firsthand the importance of site-specific viticulture, and ended up leaving King Estate to lead Benton Lane Winery then the family returned to California in 2001 where Sean had the opportunity to manage Renwood Winery and enhance his wine experience growing and marketing some of the Golden State’s best Zinfandel and Syrah. Four years later, he founded Sean Minor Wines.

This lovely Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon is ruby in color and displays aromas of lavender, cedar and raspberry fruit. Flavors of blackberries and raspberries combined with hints of savory spices coat the palate. The soft tannins and sweet oak balance lead to a long and lingering finish.

  • Carol Shelton Coquille Blanc 2018, Paso Robles, CA

    $25.00

Carol Shelton originally created the 2008 version of this wine to celebrate the 10th anniversary as a winery in 2010. With the exotic complexity and food friendliness of a white Rhone-style blend, it is a “red-drinker’s white,” a complex alternative to the more one-dimensional white varietal wines like Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. It is the perfect complement to its namesake shellfish, as well as chicken or pork dishes with buttery-creamy sauces. Exotic nose of spicy pears and white peaches, almond paste/marzipan, a touch of honeysuckle perfume. Multi-dimensional, a hard-to-describe range of aromatics, intriguing, almost mysterious! In the mouth it is crisply dry yet creamy and round and full-bodied, with nice almond paste on crisp-yet-juicy pear fruit. 46% Grenache Blanc 24% Roussanne 24% Viognier 6% Marsanne.  1203 cases produced.
