Eyrie Pinot Gris 2020, Dundee Hills, Oregon, USA

Home > Region > Region - Oregon > Eyrie Pinot Gris 2020, Dundee Hills, Oregon, USA

In the winter of 1965, after earning a degree in viticulture and enology from UC/Davis, and research in Europe, 25-year old David Lett moved to Oregon “with 3,000 grape cuttings and a theory”.   It was the first planting of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and related varieties in the Willamette Valley, and the first Pinot Gris in America.  The Eyrie Vineyards, founded by David and Diana Lett in 1966, is located in the Red Hills of Dundee, about 30 miles southwest of Portland. It was named for the red-tailed hawks who make their home (EYE-ree) in the fir trees at the top of the vineyard.  The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020 offers a medium gold color and intriguing aromas of straw, mango, tangerine and melon, with notes of jasmine and camellia, smoke and loam; after a few minutes in the glass, it unfolds hints of crystallized ginger and candied quince. The wine is supple, almost lush with slightly roasted and quite spicy stone-fruit flavors, tempered by star-bright acidity and a faceted limestone element. The finish brings in some chastening grapefruit astringency.

This Merlot is harvested from five separate hillside locations throughout the Truchard Estate Vineyard. The wines from these hillsides each have their own identity, and each contributes different characteristics to the final blend. Cabernet Franc is added in to provide additional softness and complexity. Spiced aromas of ripe plum, wild blueberry, and cassis with a touch of cedar, earth, and subtle mint. The mouth is smooth and round – layered with bright flavors of black cherries, red currants, and sweet vanilla. Ripe tannins fill the palate and provide an elegant finish of dried red fruits.

  • Lang & Reed Chenin Blanc 2019

    $32.00

The 2019 Lang & Reed Chenin Blanc from Mendocino is the fourth vintage from the Norgard Vineyard in Mendocino County in Northern California! The inspiration remains the Loire Valley in France, where Chenin Blanc gained its fame. The source for this bottling comes from a region in Mendocino referred to as the ‘Talmage Bench.’ The vineyard, located on the east side of the Russian River in an area that has excelled in growing Chenin Blanc for many years, was planted in 1980 on a gentle, north-facing slope with excellent aspect that allows for great drainage and even ripening without too much heat accumulation.   This Lang & Reed 2019 Chenin Blanc initially displays aromatic notes of linden blossom, white peach, and wildflower honey. Energetic fruit that mirrors the peach aromas unfolds on the palate with rounding flavors of white melon. The finish exhibits quiet confidence throughout the length of its smooth texture and very long-lasting flavors with just a hint of minerality. The wine, lifted and satisfying, possesses enough depth to gain complexity and nuance with a few years of cellaring.

“Gris” is the French word for gray and describes the color of these grapes, which can also create a rosé wine. Known as Pinot Grigio in Italy (“Grigio” is Italian for gray) this is an easy-drinking and food-friendly wine. Pale, straw-yellow. Pungent pear skin, lemon pith, honey and floral aromas are lifted by a gingery nuance. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering nicely concentrated pear nectar and Meyer lemon flavors that are brightened by an undercurrent of dusty minerality. Smoothly plays weight off energy and finishes long and spicy, displaying resonating, sharply defined citrus fruit character. 90 points Vinous.
