2015 Pedroncelli Winery Mother Clone Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley Sonoma USA$21.00
Several years ago, I helped out in the tasting room at Pedroncelli Winery. I always marveled at how beautiful the country side was, even on rainy days, and the care that was shown to the land. Four generations of Pedroncellis have tended the land and grown the business even during prohibition when they continued to produce grapes for home consumption. I also marveled at the fact that they always kept their wines at a reasonable price even though they had a reputation for great wines and could have charged more.
John Pedroncelli, who was instrumental in building Sonoma County’s wine industry was just two years old when his family moved to Geyserville in 1927 and started making wine. Having graduated from UC Davis with a degree in oenology, Pedroncelli went on to produce 66 vintages at the Pedroncelli Winery and continued to consult for the winery up until his death. Pedroncelli pioneered affordable, approachable wines from the Dry Creek Valley and championed Zinfandel, making California’s first Zinfandel rosé.
The Pedroncelli Mother Clone 2015 Zinfandel is a classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. Fragrant aroma of raspberry and red plum with a touch of black pepper and vanilla. Bing cherry and raspberry flavors framed by subtle black pepper spice. Well integrated flavors with round tannins and warm toasty oak in the finish.
Zaca Mesa Z-Cuvee 2014$25.00
Zaca Mesa wines are made from sustainably farmed grapes that are estate grown, produced and bottled. With over 40 years of grape growing experience in the Santa Ynez Valley, the winemaking and vineyard teams meticulously farm our vineyard to focus on terroir-driven wines. They began growing Rhône varieties in 1978 and they were the first to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County. Zaca Mesa has been producing this unique blend called the Z-Cuvee since 1993. It is inspired by the wines of Côtes du Rhône found in the southern Rhône Valley of France, where they have been blending these varieties together for centuries to create wines that are greater than the sum of their parts. The 2014 Zaca Mesa Z-Cuvee is an extremely balanced and complex Rhône blend. Grenache adds rich raspberry aromas and flavors; Mourvèdre brings notes of blueberry, meat and spice; Syrah, adds flavors of blackberry and ripe tannins; Cinsault brings a touch of dusty berry. With a nice sense of berryish fruit leading the way and hardwood kiss of richness helping out, this wine is attractive in aroma and also in supple-textured flavors. It firms up at the back without giving up anything to dryness, and while it can age a little, it does not demand cellar time.
Ancient Peaks Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Paso Robles, California, USA$17.00
The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc exhibits a vivid varietal character that is rooted in our estate Margarita Vineyard. Here, amid one of the Paso Robles region’s coolest growing environments, the Sauvignon Blanc grape achieves a fine balance of ripeness and raciness, with crisp acidity and appealing mineral accents. The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc leans into the nose with vivid varietal signatures, including notes of lime zest, grassy herb and gooseberry. The palate is crisp and clean, offering quenching flavors of grapefruit, white peach and green apple. Brisk acidity cascades into a refreshing finish.
The pungent liveliness of the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is a fine match for crab cakes, shrimp pasta in white wine sauce, grilled asparagus, Thai chicken salad, and salmon with lemon and dill.
