Intense, overt aromas of bright raspberry & hints of cassis and mint jump out of the glass. Malm Cross Blend 2015, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County, CA$28.00
The Malm Cross Blend 2015 is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc with a bit of Zinfandel and Petit Sirah blended in. Malm Cellars has become one of Sonoma County's best kept secrets! Nearly every activity here including vineyard management, crafting, production, and product distribution, revolves around one man, ex-Sonoma State soccer star turned winemaker, Brendan Malm. Malm's wines quickly exploded onto the oenophile stage, when a bottle drawn from his first barrel captured gold medal honors at the prestigious Orange County Fair. Fifteen years later, Malm Cellars wines are sought after by collectors and connoisseurs alike. The nose blooms first with red cherry, ripe plum and cocoa. The palate is explosive, lush ripe fruits give way to supple tannin, layers of chocolate covered cherries with a touch of peppery spice and firm yet restrained structure. The strong finish lingers with a touch of berries and plum.
Happy Canyon Piocho Bordeaux Red Blend 2013, Happy Canyon Valley, California, USA$36.00
Piocho Ranch was acquired by Thomas J. Barrack Jr. in 1992. Out of a love for the countryside and a ranchers life, the Barrack family developed rolling acres of vineyards. The peaceful and beautiful property sits nestled in the Happy Canyon Valley, a perfect location for growing grapes and riding horses. Two regulation sized Polo fields are groomed with the same care as the finest golf courses in the world. Piocho means “Where the two rivers meet and go to heaven.” The Happy Canyon Piocho 2013, a Bordeaux blend, has an inviting deep ruby color. Ripe black currant, cherry, espresso and smoky oak show on the nose. This wine is lush, sweet and open-knit, with a pliancy to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and chewing tobacco. The Happy Canyon Bordeaux Red Blend 2013 exhibits deep aromas of spice, dark bing cherries, wood, burnt blackberries and jam. On the palate there are slight herbal/floral flavors with minerality, dried violets and tobacco all surrounded by dense fruit. This a truly lovely wine that is wonderful to drink today when paired with big rich cuisine such as Santa Maria Tri-Tip. The wines structure will allow it to mature and age nicely for at least another decade! Dusty, slow-building tannins give grip to the finish, which repeats the cherry and licorice notes.
Oakville Winery Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Napa Valley USA$59.00
In 1903 the Pelissa family purchased 35 acres between the Napa River and the Napa Valley Railroad in Calistoga with a single $10 gold coin. Thus began one family's history in the Napa Valley. Today the same family owns approximately 1,000 acres in Napa Valley with over 300 acres designated as a preserve intact with its natural state and 635 acres farmed as certified organic vineyards. Throughout the 20th century, the family grew and their experience expanded across the valley. Then in 1993 the heirs of the Pelissa family acquired the Oakville Winery property from Heublein – Inglenook. The winery was originally built in 1877 by two Frenchmen, Jean Adolphe Brun and Jean Chaix and it was the 9th bonded winery in California. The “Brun and Chaix Oakville Winery” passed through various hands in the 20th century and when the Pelissa family acquired it they formed the Napa Wine Company and Bonded Winery #9. The winery and adjacent Pelissa Vineyard, totals 62 acres on the corner of Highway 29 and the Oakville Cross Road. In 2009 the first vintages of Oakville Winery Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel were released.
