Howell Mountain Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel 2016

Home > Region > Region - California > Howell Mountain Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel 2016

The Howell Mountain  “Old Vine” Zinfandel 2016 derives from 100+ year-old vines and is clearly proud to be a Zinfandel as it leaps from the glass with heady aromas of wild raspberries, black plum, cherry cola, baking spices, cloves, and cracked pepper. Typically, it’s a medium bodied wine with bright acidity and dusty tannins this shows wonderful aging potential as this Zinfandel blossoms with ample time in the glass – gathering palate weight and rounging out seamlessly. Enjoy now with at least a 30-minute decant, or lay it down and enjoy over the next decade. 91 pts Connoisseurs

Years ago, near the end of Prohibition, Aldo Biale made and sold wine in secret. He sold his jugs of Zin to friends and neighbors on the “down low”, and the phone started ringing regularly for re-orders. The Biale’s phone was a party line, so nosy neighbors could listen in on conversations, including orders for produce, eggs and a jug of Aldo’s homemade wine from barrels he hid in the barn. Since they also raised and sold chickens, the code word for the wine became Black Chicken, and that name continues to this day. Early harvest yields high quality wine grape crop. The Oak Knoll winegrowing region is prevalent in this wine with its ripe aromatics and juicy acidity. This wine is round and plush with perfectly ripe tannins and bright aromas of red and dark fruit – raspberries, cherries, and blackberries – star anise, black and white pepper, cocoa, and subtle, nuanced oak.

  • Mauritson Rockpile Zinfandel 2019, Rockpile Ridge

    Add to cart
    $47.00

The Mauritson family’s Rockpile Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,200-ft. elevation in the Rockpile appellation. This vineyard has sweeping sun exposures from southeast to northwest and consists of nine distinctly different blocks of Zinfandel. The blocks are all harvested at different times and fermented separately to insure the integrity and uniqueness of the individual blocks. Freshly crushed berry fruit is complemented by richer notes of cocoa and sweet oak on the nose of this gorgeous Zinfandel. The 2019 Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel carries all of the signature aromas expected from Zinfandel grown in Rockpile: candied cherry and plum; dark cocoa; ground roasted coffee; savory dried herbs and sweet earth. This incredible iteration of Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel is singularly defined by its detailed texture. It’s vibrant, yet concentrated; elegant, yet bold; velvety, yet powerful. Then it ultimately resolves into a seamless and persistent finish. This energetic Zin will benefit from at least 1-2 years of bottle age. Enjoy over the next 10-12 years.
