Kokomo Dry Creek Zinfandel 2018

Home > Region > Region - California > Kokomo Dry Creek Zinfandel 2018

Kokomo Dry Creek Zinfandel 2018 is comprised of fruit from three different vineyards: Mizany Vineyard, Timber Crest Vineyard, and Pauline’s Vineyard. Although all are located in Dry Creek Valley, the different vineyards bring three unique wines with their own distinct personalities. Mizany Vineyard is planted to the DuPratt clone of Zinfandel, which has a spicier character with a darker fruit profile. Timber Crest and Pauline’s Vineyards are both planted to the old mother-clone of Dry Creek, but are grown on two very different sites. Pauline’s Vineyard is on the valley floor in the famous Cortina gravelly loam, while Timber Crest Vineyard, the oldest of all three vineyards, is planted on the East Bench behind our winery.  The Kokomo 2018 Zinfandel is dense and structured, displaying a ravishing garnet color and showing the bright acidity and fruit of black cherry and smoky plum. Rustic yet plush, aromas of cherry, anise, and underbrush give way to focused flavors of red plum, smoky herb, and pepper.

The winemaking at Woodenhead is pure and simple. Their wine is handcrafted from a hard labor of love in tune to the natural rhythm of the land, the water, the air, and the seasons. No mechanical pumping is employed. Inoculated yeast and malolactic cultures, hand punching, basket pressing, French oak, and California fruit is what you get. Small and unique lots are their goal, ultra premium wine is the result. Dark, dense, ruby red in color. Bouquet of brandied cherries, raspberries, plums, vine bark, violets and a prune drying shed. Really something as only very old vines can be. Flavors of really ripe boysenberries, red plums, brown sugar and some spice. Full, round and robust. Medium tannins, with a good acidity to balance this wine. A mouthful. Powerful with a big statement but not hot. Will cellar many years given the pH and acidity levels. Amazing that at this stage of the vineyards’ life it has so much to give fruit wise. Perhaps the care of the grower’s hand is the magic. Wood fired anything, chicken, beef, pork or lamb. Simply an awesome Zinfandel. Enjoy it you Zin Dogs!

“This elegant Zinfandel is rich blackberry in color with open aromas of layered cherry and ripe raspberry, complemented by a seductive spice and mineral character. Beautifully structured and with great balance, the 2016 Lamborn Zin is full-bodied and rich with great length. The complex mouthfeel is perfectly integrated with toast and vanilla, and the characteristic black pepper and spicy undertones offer up to a silky and lingering finish. An exceptional example of mountaintop Zinfandel, the Lamborn vineyard is definitely in a league of its own.” – Heidi Barrett, winemaker

  • Carol Shelton Wild Thing Zinfandel 2017

    $24.00

The Carol Shelton Old Vine Mendocino Zinfandel 2017 is a treasure. Grown on the benchlands and slopes of mountainsides — this 60 plus year old vine Zinfandel was named for these wild- looking vines and also for the uninoculated, or “wild,” yeast ferment that was used to create it. Aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and raspberry fruit combine with a hint of graphite, cigar box, and vanilla-oak baking spice loveliness. Smoothly textured in mouth, and the palate is very creamy and round, with a finish that is long with lush jammy fruit. 76% Old Vine Zinfandel, 15% old vine Carignane, 9% Petite Sirah
