Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 2019, Russian River

Home > Region > Region - California > Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 2019, Russian River

With idyllic weather from start to finish, 2019 was one of the finest growing seasons of the past decade. Each wine within the Appellation Series embodies the unique qualities we cherish from the regions we work with.

There are many differences between vineyards in this small appellation, but the majority of them do share a common influence – the cooling effect that follows the Russian River inland from the Pacific coast. The resulting fog helps keep nights cool and offers vines a respite from daytime temperatures. In turn, these diurnal temperature swings slow down ripening and promote more evolved flavors in our grapes.

Over the years, they’ve been fortunate to work with many great vineyards that span a diverse and varied view into a region that many would call the heartland of California Pinot Noir. Their goal is to create a wine that showcases the essence of this magical appellation. This year, it was the latest harvest in the last five years. But, no matter the vintage, there is often a recognizably full mouthfeel and texture to the wines from the area – a common thread to the components of this blend. The Kosta Browne Russian River Pinot Noir 2019 showcases the raspberry bramble and black cherry notes of this wine along with a subtle touch of vanilla. On the palate, this is a round, spherical entry, balanced with inspiring texture. A totally complete Pinot Noir.

This is the 24th release of the St. Gregory Mendocino Pinot Noir 2016, Mendocino County’s cool climate produces a very elegant and rich style of Pinot Noir with balanced acidity, dark color, full tannins and very fruity flavors. Their style is much more French Burgundy than California. The grapes for this wine come from three truly unique vineyards located within three distinct appellations within Mendocino County. 79% of the blend is from Lost Creek Vineyards owned by Steve Petrucci and is located at the 1,200 foot elevation in the mountainous Yorkville Highlands appellation. 7% is from the Naughty Boy Vineyard located in the high elevation Potter Valley, which is grown next to the headwaters of the Russian River. 14% is Pinotage which is grown by the Gearhart Vineyard which is located in Knights Valley, just south of the Ukiah Valley in Mendocino County.

This wine is dark purple garnet in color and Burgundian in style; with rich, full and attractive aromas/flavors of ripe black cherries, plum, toasty oak and hints of earth. Soft tannins, balanced acidity and a rich, velvety mouth-feel produce a luscious wine that is enjoyable now and will develop more complexity with additional aging in the bottle.

Delicious companions with this wine are duck with dried cherries, sage-roasted double pork chops with stuffing, and roasted lamb with Mediterranean vegetables.

  • Trecini Pinot Noir 2019, Russian River Valley

From the historical town of Jera, in Tuscany, Italy, John Vicini brought with him the passion and love of wine that were handed from one generation to another for over 150 years. Now living and working with Cathy, his wife, and David, their son, they bring to you exceptional wines from the gently rolling vineyard covered hills of Sonoma County, the Russian River, and the Dry Creek Valley. Starting in 1994, John and Cathy grew and sold their own premium Russian River grapes. In 1999 they expanded their family's business to developing and introducing their own label, Trecini, representing the three Vicini's. Due to the year’s cooler climate and lower yields, the 2019 Trecini Pinot Noir shows a great deal of finesse and more of the softer undertones. The nose of this incredible Pinot brings you right to the vineyard with a real sense of terroir and an abundance of sweet fresh red fruits, mature strawberry, raspberries, and red currants. The well balanced and finesse is followed down the palate matching the aromas which are engaged by notes of exotic spices, red licorice, cola, and just a slight hint of menthol. The 777 clone does come through with the velvety palate bringing the spice while the 828 helps balance with more of the minerality and colas. Aging this Pinot Noir in French Oak for 10 months developed more complexity and enhanced the mouth feel.

In 1996, Jim Dolinsek purchased the 10.5 acres property located on Laguna road that was then planted with apples and grapes. Jim’s father coincidently used to pick cherries on the ranch in the 30’s. The ranch was originally planted by the Frati family which included Old Vine Zinfandel. The vineyard has a rich Italian history of making field-blends including Alicante bouschet, teraldago, tempranillo, golden chasselas, black muscat and mouverde. The soil is the rich Russian River Valley Gold Ridge soil that provides complexity and muscle to the wines.

Tim Borges of Portalupie Winery has known Jim and his brother for over 30 years and had the good fortune to start working with Dolinsek Ranch with the first vintage of Zinfandel in 2009. In 2013, Portalupi started purchasing the entire crop of Pinot Noir. Portalupi has been producing award winning Old Vine Zinfandel and Pinot Noir since.

Baked bread and compost aromas compete with oak toastiness and ripe dark cherry in this wine, which veers into a beautiful velvety mouthfeel.
