Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 2019, Sonoma Coast

Home > Region > Region - California > Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 2019, Sonoma Coast

The Sonoma Coast appellation overlaps with that of the Russian River Valley in many places and is similarly shaped by the ocean. Local geology can be complex here, a direct result of being located on the intersection of two tectonic plates. For this wine, Kosta Browne was drawn to vineyards that are particularly influenced by the Pacific Ocean and are fortunate to work with some spectacular sites. Together, they form a singular wine that is distinctively Sonoma Coast.

The vineyards they source from lie in both the southern portion of the appellation and in the northern true coastal zone. In the southern area, the Petaluma Wind Gap and the San Pablo Bay drive cooler temperatures and provide us with deep flavors and richly textured wines. The vineyards from the coastal reaches contribute savory and spice characteristics that we love as well as great structure and poise. On the nose, the Kosta Browne Russian River Pinot Noir 2019 shows expressive red apple, raspberry, and pomegranate aromas burst from the glass alongside soft notes of sage and spice. This medium-bodied, pristine Pinot Noir has a lovely texture and a refined finish.

This is the most important wine in the Banshee lineup, and they treat it as such. The 2018 edition is an exciting, yet friendly wine, bursting at the seams with aromas of macerated wild berries and an elegant, soft earth undertone. The flavors combine both sweet and tart, reminiscent of Santa Rosa plums and wild blackberries that grow so commonly in Sonoma Wine Country. The finish is bright, slightly herbal, and savory making this an excellent food wine, as well as a charming drinking experience by itself.

Bill Stoller was born on the property and raised on the family farm outside of Dayton, Oregon. Bill’s decision to transform the family farm into a vineyard stemmed from much more than wishful thinking. With the help of Burgundian winemaker Patrice Rion and local vineyard consultants, Bill confirmed that the very factors that made this land a poor choice for turkey farming were perfect for an award-winning vineyard. In 1995, Bill planted 10 acres each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, combining the experience of consulting viticulturists with innovative vineyard techniques in order to maximize the grape’s quality. Crafted exclusively from estate fruit, the Stoller Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2018 is made in an elegant, approachable style. It has aromas of brambleberry and cherry with floral notes of lilac and violets and understated hints of cola and cinnamon. The palate features a purity of red fruit flavors, bright acidity and medium tannins. This approachable wine pairs well with a variety of foods, including cedar plank grilled salmon with tarragon aioli, pulled pork with cherry chutney and pickled onions, creamed morel mushrooms with shallots and hard cheeses, especially Comté.

    $29.00

Named after owners’, Tim  Perr and Scott Knight, coastal hometown of Pacific Palisades (Pali for short), located on the west side of Los Angeles, the wine bears the name of a Pacific Palisades neighborhood – Huntington.

Brilliant deep red/garnet color. Nose shows fresh cherries, strawberry, baking spices, toasted oak and hints of bacon fat. The palate gives up dark red fruit flavors, earthy mushrooms and loads of spices finishing with warm notes of vanilla and coffee. Silky texture on a medium-weighted palate with perfumed flavors that permeate up to the nose. Lively, visceral and brooding.

“This bottling is one of the most reliably delicious Pinot Noirs for less than $30 each vintage, and this year is one of the best. Warm, even buttery aromas of brioche, strawberry jam and baking spice prove immensely inviting, leading into an approachable yet complex palate where fruit-punch flavors are lifted by clove, tart plum skins and vanilla on the finish.” Editor’s Choice – 92 Points – Wine Enthusiast
