Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Home > Region > Region - California > Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2019

You’ll enjoy the pale straw color as you pour the Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2019 into your glass, followed by inviting aromas of  fresh peaches, white river rocks, white nectarine and hints of ginger.  There is a savory combination of stone fruits including white peach and nectarine coupled with zest of buddha’s hand. Captivating structure paired with complex flavors develop in the glass. A notable lengthy finish is encased in apricots, white peaches and savory ginger which speak to the age-worthy capability of this Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2018 Trecini Merlot comes from the Dunn Vineyard, which sits in the low-lying eastern foothills of Sonoma County in a slightly warmer region of the Russian River Valley. The vines grow in well drained gravely soils on a westerly facing slope which allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and capture the last bit of the sun’s afternoon warmth, an essential factor in this much cooler vintage. Memorable, the Merlot brings a richer mouth-feel, with a rich velvet texture. The lower alcohol allows for these deeper complex textures and dimensions to come together and produce a distinctive classic Merlot more reminiscent of Europe than California. Trecini Merlot shows off delicious red fruit characters, with some whiffs of dried herbs and a touch of tobacco. Suitable for drinking now, we believe that this wine has enough natural acidity and structure to be consumed for several years to come.

  • Woodenhead Zinfandel 2017, Guido Venturi Vineyard, Mendocino County, USA

    $38.00

The winemaking at Woodenhead is pure and simple. Their wine is handcrafted from a hard labor of love in tune to the natural rhythm of the land, the water, the air, and the seasons. No mechanical pumping is employed. Inoculated yeast and malolactic cultures, hand punching, basket pressing, French oak, and California fruit is what you get. Small and unique lots are their goal, ultra premium wine is the result. Dark, dense, ruby red in color. Bouquet of brandied cherries, raspberries, plums, vine bark, violets and a prune drying shed. Really something as only very old vines can be. Flavors of really ripe boysenberries, red plums, brown sugar and some spice. Full, round and robust. Medium tannins, with a good acidity to balance this wine. A mouthful. Powerful with a big statement but not hot. Will cellar many years given the pH and acidity levels. Amazing that at this stage of the vineyards’ life it has so much to give fruit wise. Perhaps the care of the grower’s hand is the magic. Wood fired anything, chicken, beef, pork or lamb. Simply an awesome Zinfandel. Enjoy it you Zin Dogs!

  • Ottimino Zinfinity 2018, Sonoma County. CA USA

    $20.00

Ottimino means “Little Eight,” so called because he was the last of eight children and the smallest, but had big ambitions. When he came to America in 1913, he made his home on a beautiful ridge above Green Valley (western Sonoma County) and forged a life on new soil.  Ottimino became a favorite in the area, and always spoke proudly of his vines.  along the way one of the friends he made was Brad Alper, who had a dream similar to Ottimino's. Brad's first grapes grew as Ottimino's time was coming to an end, and the legacy was passed on. His inquiries led him to veteran winemaker Bill Knuttel, who instantly knew that Brad's (and Ottimino's) dream would soon become Brad and Bill's passion. Long time California wine-maker William Knuttel has concentrated on ultra-premium winemaking for the majority of his career. Knuttel’s winemaking journey began at Saintsbury.  While there he founded and was owner/winemaker of Tria, producing fine Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel. Bill has also served as Vice President and Winemaker at Chalk Hill Winery  and Dry Creek Vineyard, as well as producing his own label. The foundation of the 2018 Ottimino Zinfinity is the 50 year old vines in Biglieri Vineyard, Dry Creek, blended with some Bradford Mountain selection Zin from Ottimino Vineyard, their home ranch. To these finely nuanced Zins, they added a touch of fruit from Chalk Hill.  Finally, they added Petite Sirah from Doug Rafanelli’s steep hillside vines to enhance the density and structure of the blend.  Deep and defined, optimally ripened blackberry fruit is joined in the developing aromas of this complex Zin by a distinctive note of dusty soil spice, and the ensuing flavors reflect the same. A trim bit of tannin lends structural spine and neatly placed acids keep things agile, and all the while persistent fruit is the force that drives this one through to a very long finish.
