McNab Ridge Reserve Zinfandel 2019, Chase Vineyard
The Chase Family has been growing grapes in the Mendocino AVA of Redwood Valley since 1947, becoming CCOF organic certified in 2005. Recognizing the exceptional quality of the fruit, my family began working with the Chase family nearly five decades ago and selected this vineyard to make McNab Ridge’s inaugural Zinfandel in 2002. In honor of the Chase’s exemplary stewardship, they have produced this Zinfandel without the use of any added sulfites, further preserving the terroir that is the Chase Vineyard.

Ottimino Zinfinity 2018, Sonoma County. CA USA
$20.00Ottimino means “Little Eight,” so called because he was the last of eight children and the smallest, but had big ambitions. When he came to America in 1913, he made his home on a beautiful ridge above Green Valley (western Sonoma County) and forged a life on new soil. Ottimino became a favorite in the area, and always spoke proudly of his vines. along the way one of the friends he made was Brad Alper, who had a dream similar to Ottimino's. Brad's first grapes grew as Ottimino's time was coming to an end, and the legacy was passed on. His inquiries led him to veteran winemaker Bill Knuttel, who instantly knew that Brad's (and Ottimino's) dream would soon become Brad and Bill's passion. Long time California wine-maker William Knuttel has concentrated on ultra-premium winemaking for the majority of his career. Knuttel’s winemaking journey began at Saintsbury. While there he founded and was owner/winemaker of Tria, producing fine Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel. Bill has also served as Vice President and Winemaker at Chalk Hill Winery and Dry Creek Vineyard, as well as producing his own label. The foundation of the 2018 Ottimino Zinfinity is the 50 year old vines in Biglieri Vineyard, Dry Creek, blended with some Bradford Mountain selection Zin from Ottimino Vineyard, their home ranch. To these finely nuanced Zins, they added a touch of fruit from Chalk Hill. Finally, they added Petite Sirah from Doug Rafanelli’s steep hillside vines to enhance the density and structure of the blend. Deep and defined, optimally ripened blackberry fruit is joined in the developing aromas of this complex Zin by a distinctive note of dusty soil spice, and the ensuing flavors reflect the same. A trim bit of tannin lends structural spine and neatly placed acids keep things agile, and all the while persistent fruit is the force that drives this one through to a very long finish.

Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel 2020
$32.00“I am incredibly proud of this wine. I have said it here before but it bears repeating—even though this is one of the least expensive wines we make, in many ways it is the most important. First, it is the one Bedrock wine that trickles out to most markets, so if someone gets introduced to our wines, there is a good chance it is this one. As such, it has to be reflective of the style we place value on. Second, this is the wine that allows us to rehab old vineyards by giving us a place to put the fruit while we upgrade farming, pruning, and soil health; at an average of 80 years of age, these lovely old vines appreciate the attention. Third, we now farm over 50% of the fruit that goes into this bottling, which allows us to make the hard farming decisions (dropping fruit, picking in multiple passes, etc.) to ensure we get the quality we need. Fourth, it is a statewide blend of vines, which means we can flex towards the strengths of a vintage. Fifth, we want this wine to spread the gospel of Zinfandel from California, and as such this sees fruit from great sites such as Evangelho, Bedrock, Nervo Ranch, Teldeschi Ranch, Sodini and Pato Vineyard. The 2020 is a blend of 85% Zinfandel filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Petite Sirah and scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vineyards. The 2020 Zinfandel Old Vine offers a more savory, darker fruited, spicy style and has loads of character. Blackberries, plums, cedary incense, flowers, and loamy soil all define the nose, and it has medium-bodied density and depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. -Morgan Twain-Peterson. Rich and supple, this is an explosion of pure, decadent fruit. Floral huckleberry and Chinese five-spice powder aromas open to layered blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice flavors that linger.
