Moone Tsai Chardonnay 2015, Napa County

Home > Region > Region - California > Moone Tsai Chardonnay 2015, Napa County

The whims of Mother Nature were on full display during the 2015 growing season…marked by ample winter rains, a mild spring, hail in June, and intermittent waves of summer heat. A third and final temperature spike in early September compelled a spirited pick from our hallmark block on Bald Mountain, with the end result being a delightfully delicious chardonnay displaying both richness and resolve. On the nose, the wine expresses notes of star jasmine and citrus, giving way to flavors that tempt the palate with a pleasing panoply of lemon candy, grapefruit zest, tropical fruit, and (wait for it…), a suggestion of bananas foster and crème brulée. Aged 17-months in 30% new French oak, the wine demonstrates a pleasingly light acidity to provide a refreshing counterpoint that balances the wine from start-to-finish. Teasingly inviting but refined in a way that memorable white burgundies can often be, the wine conjures up the dulcet tones of Fleetwood Mac’s sultry singer-songwriter, Christine McVie, who in her memorable hit, “You Make Loving Fun” compelled many of us who “never did believe in the ways of magic” to “…begin to wonder why.”

The Mirassou family – the oldest winemaking family in the United States – have been pioneers in a number of important ways. One of the most relevant in terms of this new Chardonnay release is that they were the first family to plant vineyards in modern-day Monterey County in 1961. Aged on the lees for about 10 months and barrel-fermented in about 50% new French oak, three sub-lots of Chardonnay were blended and bottled without filtration or fining. Each sub-lot (of roughly equal size) was fermented with a different yeast regimen. For one portion we did “native” fermentation (letting the ambient yeast environment ferment the must) while the other lots were fermented with one of our favored cultured
yeasts: CY-3079 and QA23. Each lot was wonderfully individualistic, differing in flavor, aroma, and texture. Together, they created a wine of finesse and elegance; mouth-filling richness underscored by precise, length-producing acidity.

The Rose  Rock Chardnnay 2017 is made by the famed Domaine Drouhin people! Super fresh aromas of lemon and lime zest, leading to fresh white peaches. This has a very impressive sense of purity and clarity that follows to the fresh, linear palate. Impressively rened chardonnay.”  This Roserock Chardonnay is vibrant and round, with broad floral notes and energetic touches of noisette, peach and pear. The palate’s enveloping texture is balanced by clear structure and a sense of minerality. It is an elegant and complex wine, with a long finish, and I expect this vintage to evolve nicely over the next few years.– 94pts James Suckling; 92pts Wine Enthusiast Editor’s Choice; 91pts Wine Spectator, Top 100 Wines of 2018.

  • Hahn Chardonnay 2018, Monterey County

The Chardonnay grape favors cooler climates. Most of the fruit for this wine grows in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County where cool winds from Monterey Bay bathe the vineyards. This climatic condition causes fruit to ripen slowly, resulting in balanced, vibrant flavors, while the region’s rocky-loam soils help juxtapose ripeness with acidity. Hahn’s own vineyards in Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco AVAs are a significant source of fruit for this Chardonnay.

This rounded and supple Chardonnay delights with aromas of pineapple, mango, pear and vanilla that gracefully give way to flavors of green banana, baked apples and toffee. Its ample mouthfeel reveals a delicate acidity beautifully balanced with a lingering note of sweet butter on the creamy finish. They age this 100% Chardonnay in 40% new French oak, with the balance in neutral oak.
