From the Rioja clone and aged 12 months in French oak, the Rabble Tempranillo 2015, Mossfire Ranch Vineyard. Made up of 100% Tempranillo, it is opaque purple-colored, offering up a super-expressive bouquet of bacon, tar, mineral, pencil lead, blueberry, black raspberry, and licorice. Smooth-textured, layered, ripe, and sweetly-fruited, this forward pleasurable, lengthy effort has 2-3 years of aging potential but can be enjoyed now and over the next 10 years.

Starting in late 1954 people throughout France began reporting UFO sightings. The sightings were popularized by heavy media attention, and became a concern for the citizens of France. The most common shape of the crafts reported were cigar shaped, called “Cigare Volant.” The people of Chateauneuf du Pape were so concerned by the sightings and the effects the UFOs may have on their wine, that the mayor banned the UFOs from landing in their vineyards. Tipping his hat to this story and the famous wine, Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyards named his Chateauneuf style wine Le Cigare Volant. The Bonny Doon Cigare du Volant 2012 is a beautiful wine – dark, mulberry color, and a first nose of dark, cool loamy earth with suggestions of raspberries, Damson plums and cherry/chocolatedance on the palate. It is sleek and racy with a lively acidity, very soft tannins and great persistence. Zaca Mesa wines are made from sustainably farmed grapes that are estate grown, produced and bottled. With over 40 years of grape growing experience in the Santa Ynez Valley, the winemaking and vineyard teams meticulously farm our vineyard to focus on terroir-driven wines. They began growing Rhône varieties in 1978 and they were the first to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County. Zaca Mesa has been producing this unique blend called the Z-Cuvee since 1993. It is inspired by the wines of Côtes du Rhône found in the southern Rhône Valley of France, where they have been blending these varieties together for centuries to create wines that are greater than the sum of their parts. The 2014 Zaca Mesa Z-Cuvee is an extremely balanced and complex Rhône blend. Grenache adds rich raspberry aromas and flavors; Mourvèdre brings notes of blueberry, meat and spice; Syrah, adds flavors of blackberry and ripe tannins; Cinsault brings a touch of dusty berry. With a nice sense of berryish fruit leading the way and hardwood kiss of richness helping out, this wine is attractive in aroma and also in supple-textured flavors. It firms up at the back without giving up anything to dryness, and while it can age a little, it does not demand cellar time.
