Rock and Clay Tannat 2016, Matthew’s Station Vineyard, Russian River
A unique grape originating in the Gascony region of France, Tannat takes on a brilliant life in this standalone expression from Matthew’s Station Vineyard in Russian River Valley. Matthew’s Station Vineyard is located in the “Middle Reach” terroir of the Russian River Valley AVA, near the town of Windsor and is owned by the Kunde family. Dark ruby in color. Complex and full of character, this wine is an exploration in evolving flavors supported by a robust structure of acid and tannins. Plush raspberries, violets and cocoa lead on the palate, with a swirl of blackberries, cedar, and a hint of mint on the nose. The tannins are firm, with a lingering finish touched with dried herbs and spice. This is an unusual varietal, but we were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked it!
