St. Gregory Pinot Noir 2016, Mendocino

Home > Region > Region - California > St. Gregory Pinot Noir 2016, Mendocino

This is the 24th release of the St. Gregory Mendocino Pinot Noir 2016, Mendocino County’s cool climate produces a very elegant and rich style of Pinot Noir with balanced acidity, dark color, full tannins and very fruity flavors. Their style is much more French Burgundy than California. The grapes for this wine come from three truly unique vineyards located within three distinct appellations within Mendocino County. 79% of the blend is from Lost Creek Vineyards owned by Steve Petrucci and is located at the 1,200 foot elevation in the mountainous Yorkville Highlands appellation. 7% is from the Naughty Boy Vineyard located in the high elevation Potter Valley, which is grown next to the headwaters of the Russian River. 14% is Pinotage which is grown by the Gearhart Vineyard which is located in Knights Valley, just south of the Ukiah Valley in Mendocino County.

This wine is dark purple garnet in color and Burgundian in style; with rich, full and attractive aromas/flavors of ripe black cherries, plum, toasty oak and hints of earth. Soft tannins, balanced acidity and a rich, velvety mouth-feel produce a luscious wine that is enjoyable now and will develop more complexity with additional aging in the bottle.

Delicious companions with this wine are duck with dried cherries, sage-roasted double pork chops with stuffing, and roasted lamb with Mediterranean vegetables.

Land's Edge Pinot Noir is a classic “True”  Sonoma Coast multi-vineyard Pinot Noir blend from stunningly beautiful, mostly estate vineyards that overlook the cool Pacific Ocean coastline.  This wine has a floral, raspberry and black cherry scented bouquet complemented by balanced oak and broad, deep and rich cola, earth and spice notes in the finish.  “The 2016 Hartford Court Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards is soft, open and expressive, all of which suggest it is best enjoyed over the next few years. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and a hint of new oak meld together on the supple finish. The Land's Edge is a blend of fruit from Far Coast and Seascape, and is a great introduction to the house style.” Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate.  92 Points.

This is the most important wine in the Banshee lineup, and they treat it as such. The 2018 edition is an exciting, yet friendly wine, bursting at the seams with aromas of macerated wild berries and an elegant, soft earth undertone. The flavors combine both sweet and tart, reminiscent of Santa Rosa plums and wild blackberries that grow so commonly in Sonoma Wine Country. The finish is bright, slightly herbal, and savory making this an excellent food wine, as well as a charming drinking experience by itself.

  • Steele Pinot Noir 2015 Sangiacomo Vineyard, Green Acres, Carneros

    $42.00

The Sangiacomo Vineyards are situated in many areas of southern Sonoma County in the area known as Carneros. For many years this was just grazing land, thought to be too cold for the production of fine quality wine grapes. To look at the land one would agree that grapes should not do well here: the heavy adobe clay soil and the lack of sun seemed to contradict the accepted viticultural wisdom. However, for varieties which do best in cooler conditions, especially Pinot Noir, this is the place. Since there are many different vineyard blocks,Steele Wines keeps each separate during the fermentation and aging of the Steele Pinot Noir Carneros 2015.

Steele has worked with Pinot Noir from Sangiacomo since their first vintage in 1991. Each year they choose the best lots and produce a single vineyard bottling in exceptional years. This blend is a beautiful and consistent expression of Pinot Noir: medium color and the pronounced aroma of Bing cherries and raspberries, combined with a silky, smooth structure, slight earthiness and mild tannin create perfect balance and a delicious, lingering finish. We recommend roast pheasant with a cherry and almond chutney, or with creamy polenta with mushrooms and eggplant.
