Wine Snob* Blancbird 2019, Clarksburg

Home > Region > Region - California > Wine Snob* Blancbird 2019, Clarksburg

The Wine Snob* 2019 Blancbird is a blend of 75% Chenin Blanc and 25% Chardonnay from sustainably-farmed vineyards at a family farm in Clarksburg (one of the top AVAs for Chenin Blanc production outside of the Loire Valley). This wine was cold-fermented and aged in stainless steel, so it’s crisp and refreshing. With notes of flower blossoms, lemon bars, and chamomile, layered with wet stone and ginger, we like to think of Blancbird as Springtime in a bottle. It’s perfect for sipping by itself on a sunny afternoon, but it also pairs well with spinach dip and veggies, smoked salmon, and goat cheese.

“Gris” is the French word for gray and describes the color of these grapes, which can also create a rosé wine. Known as Pinot Grigio in Italy (“Grigio” is Italian for gray) this is an easy-drinking and food-friendly wine. Pale, straw-yellow. Pungent pear skin, lemon pith, honey and floral aromas are lifted by a gingery nuance. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering nicely concentrated pear nectar and Meyer lemon flavors that are brightened by an undercurrent of dusty minerality. Smoothly plays weight off energy and finishes long and spicy, displaying resonating, sharply defined citrus fruit character. 90 points Vinous.

  • Gramercy Cellars Viognier 2019, Washington

    $24.00

An interesting opportunity presented itself to Gramercy Cellars to source fruit from a beautiful vineyard called Antoine Creek, just east of Lake Chelan along the banks of the Columbia River. The Lake Chelan AVA is a much cooler region of Washington and is ideal for white wines, especially Viognier.

Viognier is a tricky grape to grow in the vineyard.  In hot sites, the grapes tend to get fully mature on the sun side of the cluster and completely under-ripe on the shade side of the cluster.  In Condrieu, some producers are known to rotate the clusters to get the backside ripe.  The grapes coming from Antoine Creek Vineyard have consistent ripeness throughout the cluster, most likely a product of being grown in a cooler area. The 2019 is a perfect balance of texture and elegance.  The nose is floral, tropical and mineral. This wine has a very long mouthfeel with intense acid structure but remains balanced.

Fermented 75% of the wine in stainless steel to give the wine freshness and 25% in neutral wood with battonage to add texture.

Exotic tree and tropical fruits – peach, apricot, passion fruit, guava, mango. Bursts with white flowers and Asian spice. Fresh, clean and extremely aromatic. Explosive acidity, especially for Viognier, with mid-palate richness while still remaining light on the palate. Very concentrated and complex.

  • Stolpman Roussanne 2017, Ballard Canyon

    $34.00

The French named the grape “Roussanne” after the elusive rust color that develops late in the year, usually not until November. Cold nights and limestone ensure the Stolpman Roussanne 2017 retains balance even as the Thanksgiving holiday approached.  The intense Santa Barbara sun and the absence of harvest-time rain combine to ensure the grapes taste fresh and vibrant. This is a voluptuously rich, full-bodied white wine.  The 2017 Roussanne remains bright and lively thanks to relatively high acid from the addition of a small amount of Chardonnay.  This wine is exceedingly approachable now, or cellar it two to five years for an even more luxuriously rich profile. A creamy mouthfeel with a bouquet of white flower, lemon meringue, and sweet cedar.  Pair it with Sushi, Ramen, or Pho! Or throw some shrimp on the barbecue!
